Barltrop seals the win
Having gone close on several occasion this season Sam Barltrop broke through to take victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Advance Ashburton, 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday.
The result was far from a forgone conclusion leading into the final stages with a solid group of riders in the front bunch and the back markers cutting into their margin.
It was Barltrop who had made the decisive move, jumping from the pack with the finish line in sight and holding on strongly to take the win and lift the Brian Cavill Memorial Shield.
Brian Cavill’s nephew, the evergreen Tony McManus was in the thick of the finish to secure second place.
Paul Chapman put his recent block of training to good use, stepped onto the final podium position.
Jelle Hendrikson produced his best race of the season to secure fourth spot.
Ged Wall and John Doherty rounded out the top six.
Back marker Steve Hands claimed fastest time honours, riding the course in 65.51.
Co-markers Larry Neal and Craig Domigan recorded second and third time.
The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.
Honor Bradford dug deep in a four up sprint to the line to claim the hard fought win.
Eliza McKenzie kicked her first hit out of the season with a great ride to take second place.
Leah Reid backed up some good recent results to secure third place.
Isabel Wall, Thomas Stevenson, and Charlotte Neal filled out the top half dozen.
Scratch marker Isabella Inglis lifted the fastest time trophy, riding the distance in 28.56.
Merv Grewar took division two honours from Kenny Johnston and Janette Hooper.
Next week the Club will contest a graded scratch event around the Blackbridge block.
Neal tames the tough conditions
The tough windy conditions had its say in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, White Fox and Jones Lawyers, 45km handicap event around the Dawsons Road block on Sunday.
The conditions set up a chance for the scratch markers to work their way through the field for victory, and they took the opportunity, finding the front inside the final 3 kilometres.
Larry Neal had the best of the four up sprint to claim the major spoils, and in doing so recording the fastest time of 63.02.
Kyle Gray who continues to impress, picked up second place.
Steve Hands secured the final podium position.
Tony Ward dug deep to take fourth place.
The ever improving Mike Pearce, and Cole Harris rounded out the top six.
The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap ride.
Front marker Tom Reid produced a top shelf effort to keep the chasing marks at bay to lift the trophy.
It was a great day for the Reid stable, with Tom’s big sister Leah Reid laying down her best ride of the season to secure second place.
Isabel Wall was in the thick of the finish to record a well-deserved third placing.
Cooper Spillane made his trip north worthwhile with a solid ride to record fourth place.
Fifth place getter Mitch Brookland claimed fastest time honours, riding the distance in 22.29.
Fellow scratch marker Cam Anderson was hot on his tail in sixth pace.
Ryan Spillane had the final to take the win in Division 2, from Kerry Clough and Kenny Johnston.
Next week the Club will contest a 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.
Wilson makes it one form one
Ashley Wilson made the best possible start to his cycling season taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Brad Hudson Flooring, Mathieson Chartered Accountants, 36km handicap event around the Wakanui-Haketere block on Sunday.
Wilson made a solo mid race break, riding strongly to find the front and held on to take the major spoils.
Co-marker Nig Chatterton chased bravely, holding out the fast charging group behind to secure second place.
Sam Barltrop backed up this previous week’s top effort, claiming the final podium position.
Montique Brake, Ben Knights, and Gareth Lewis continued their good early season form to round out the top six.
Scratch marker Steve Hands took fastest time honours, riding the distance in a quick 49.29.
Larry Neal and Kyle Gray secured second and third time.
The juniors and division 2 competed over 16km.
Honor Bradford rode strongly to get to the front of the race and maintain a gap to the chasing riders to secure the victory.
Thomas Stevenson laid down another top ride to take second place.
Back marker Isabella Inglis rode through the field to secure third place and in doing so recorded the fastest time, covering the course in 29.44.
Sarah Gould, Leah Reid, and Charlotte Neal filled the top half dozen.
A solid number of division 2 riders went to the line.
Nina Bradford made it a great day for the Bradford stable, claiming the win and fastest time honours.
Janette Hooper backed up last week’s win with a solid second place performance.
Kerry Clough was in the thick of the finish to secure third place.
