Waitangi weekend hit out

Bragging rights were up for grabs when the Tinwald Cycling Club contested the Canterbury Tree Topping Ltd, The Sausage Man, 48km graded scratch event around the Wakanui block on Sunday.

All four grades where well represented with the final results wide open until the end.

“A” grade saw the visiting riders filling the podium positions, with Timaru rider Glen Gould timing his sprint to the second to claim the victory.  Gould covered the distance in 67.47.

Close on his heels in second was Jordan Gilmore with Cam Alexander taking the third place spoils.

Gareth Lewis made a bold break with 2km to go and held on strongly to the secure “B” grade win.

Rob Hooper led in the chasing bunch to lift second place with Nick Grijns producing his best race of the season in third.

Jamie Smitheram continued his good form to claim the “C” grade win.

Paul Williams finished the race of strongly storming into second place with Paul Brake in the thick of the finish to take third.

Jake Jarman having his first start was the victor in “D” grade.

He was made to work hard by second placegetter Mark Smitheram with Patrick Barton rewarded for his hard efforts taking the final podium position.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.

Ryan Gallagher had enough in the tank to edge clear in the final 200 metres to take the win and secure fastest time honours, riding the course in 31.42.

Co-marker Honor Bradford had a great right to take second place by the barest of margins from the ever improving Charlotte Neal.

Kaidyn Broomhall secured the fourth place spoils.

Allan Johns took division 2 honours from Nigel Leary and Allan Broomhall.

Next week the Club will travel across the river to contest 47km handicap event at Terrace Downs.

Davidson, One from One

First time starter George Davidson had a day to remember when he took out Tinwald Cycling Club’s, 50km handicap event around the roads of Rakaia on Sunday.

The victory saw him lift the John Cleary Memorial trophy.

Davidson and his co-markers would have been well aware of a large group of riders cutting into there lead over the concluding stages but dug deep to cross the line with 25 seconds to spare.

Matt Ward having his first start of the season sprinted strongly to secure second place.

Matt Marshall continued his stellar season with a hard fought third place.

The evergreen Paul Williams was in the thick of the finish to claim fourth position.

John Holdem led the chasing bunch in to take fifth place with Gareth Lewis rounding out a great ride in sixth.

Scratch marker Kyle Gray rode the course in 72.47 to lift fastest time honours.

Co-markers Tony Ward and Larry Neal secured second and third time respectively.  

The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event.

Kaidyn Broomhall who continues to go from strength to strength, had a top ride to record the victory.

Charlotte Neal was right on his tail in second place.

Zoe Spillane filled the final podium position, covering the distance in 26.43 to also record the fastest time.

Zac Brookland was hot on her tail in fourth position.

Division 2 spoils went to Kerry Clough from Kenny Johnston, and Brian Ellis.

Next week the Club will contest a graded scratch race over 48km around the Wakanui Beach block.

           

Templeton in fine form

Ross Templeton reaped the rewards of some good recent training rides when he lifted the Dean Cooksley Memorial trophy in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s, 45km event contested on the roads around Methven on Sunday.

Templeton and his co-markers worked well to find the front of the race inside the final 10km. 

Templeton made the decisive move in the straight, jumping clear of his bunch to find the line strongly.

Paul Williams led the chasing bunch in to take the second place spoils.

Matt Marshall produced his best race of the season to secure the final podium position.

Don Morrison continued his good form to be in the thick of the finish to claim fourth place.

Jamie Smitheram and Don Sutton rounded out the top six.

Timaru visitor James Wilson lifted fastest time honours riding the course in 62.23.

Co-markers Kyle Gray and Larry Neal recorded second and third time respectively.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event.

Honor Bradford had the final say in the kick to the line to record a hard fought win over second place getter Leah Reid.

Honor’s efforts also saw her secure fastest time honours riding the distance in 31.01.

Charlotte Neal produce a great ride to take third place with Kaidyn Broomhall backing up last weeks top effort with fourth place.

Brian Ellis had the best of the sprint finish to take division 2 victory from Kerry Clough and Kenny Johnston.

Next week the Club will travel to Rakaia to contest a 50km handicap event.
