Championship title to Lawler
Frequent Christchurch visitor Quinton Lawler ensured his trip south to contest the Tinwald Tavern Mid-Canterbury Cycling Championships was a fruitful one, when he took victory and lifted the major spoils.
The final race of the season saw a good field of riders contest the 64km event around the Wakanui Beach block on Saturday.
Lawler and his co-markers had found the front in the final lap and settled into their work, but the chasing group had different ideas and hauled them in inside the final 2km.
Lawler had the final say however producing a well-timed sprint to get to the line in first place.
Gareth Lewis who chased strongly all day was rewarded with second place, and also lifted the first local home trophy.
Larry Neal getting back to his peak fitness also put in a solid afternoons work to secure third place.
Mitch Brookland held on bravely for fourth place and take the under 19 title.
Richard Kirwan and Kaylib Gorrie backed up there recent good form to round out the top six.
Fastest time ribbon were also up for grabs.
Steve Hands rode the course in 90.37 to record the overall fastest time.
Craig Domigan was hot on his heels to claim the veteran 2 fastest time ribbon, with fellow co-marker Darryl Kircher securing the veteran 3 title.
Jelle Hendrikson dug deep to take the senior men’s ribbon.
Tony McManus rounded out a good season to claim veteran 4 honours.
Kristine Marriott produced her trade mark tough effort to secure the overall women’s fastest time title riding the course in 95.57.
Zoe Spillane showed she will be one to watch, lifted the u19 women’s spoils.
Emma Waite is another to watch in the coming season recording the senior women’s fastest time.
Kim Marshall took the veteran 1 women’s fastest time ribbon, with Liz Wylie receiving the veteran 4 title.
Junior titles were also up for the taking, raced over 16km.
Charlotte Neal capped off a great season with a victory and lifted the Mid-Canterbury title.
Carter Shepherd who has had a top shelf first season held on strongly to take second place.
Eliza McKenzie charged home to secure the final podium position.
Fourth placegetter Zac Brookland lifted the u15 boys fastest time ribbon.
Jack Gorrie was on his shoulder to claim fifth place.
Sixth placegetter Connor Toomey recorded the fastest time and u17 boys title, riding the distance in 25.25.
Olivia Ewing produced another solid effort to take the u17 girls ribbon.
Sophie Best fought hard all the way to the line to lift the u15 girls fastest time spoils.
Janette Hooper took division 2 honours with second placegetter Katherine Gorrie recording the fastest time.
