Ward Lifts Family Shield

Back marker, Tony Ward and his fellow scratch men charged through the field to set up a sprint finish to determine the winner of Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Calder Stewart, 48 km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday.

Ward had the final say and in doing so had the honour of lifting the trophy in his father’s name, the Eddie Ward Shield.

His ride also earned him the fastest time ribbon covering the course in 67.41.

Brad Hudson secured the second place spoils with Michael Templeton claiming the final podium position.

Myles O’Donnell and Rachel Thow put their recent Calder Stewart elite race series form to good use to secure fourth and fifth places.

Kristine Marriott backed up from victory in the Mt Somers mountain bike race the day before to take sixth spot.

Good fields were the order of the day in the junior and division 2 events, contested over 16km.

Emma Begg competing in her first season of racing had a day to remember holding out the chasers to secure the victory.

Suzie Leech chased hard and was rewarded for a solid days work taking second place with Jenna Borthwick riding into good form leading up to the NZ Track Cycling Championships securing the third place spoils.

Ethan Titheridge, Maddy Trusler-Clark, and Luke Skinner rounded out the top six.

Oliver Davidson has hit a vein of top end of season form to take fastest time honours riding the course in 27.15.

Hilary Singlewood saw off all challengers to take the win in division 2. Debbie Skinner claimed second place with Beth Begg making it an all women’s trifecta riding into third place.

Dean Rattray took fastest time honours completing the distance in 27.52.

Next week the Club will contest a 60km handicap event around the Blackbridge block.
